When it comes to health many people spend a lot of time thinking about just their body which is the obvious choice. It is generally easy to tell when you are physically unwell. However, when it comes to focusing on the mind it may feel like you are walking through a mine field. There are so many therapies and theories that make healing not a straightforward task. But here at Learn Your Flow we love to explore different self-care practices that can help you to find balance and peace. Over the last few months, we have been exploring meditation. We have covered the benefits of practicing, where and when to practice. But the journey does not end here. This month we will be exploring how to start up a new meditation practice and encouraging you to embark on a 30-day meditation challenge.
Meditation simply means to think, contemplate, or ponder. Meditation is the process in which you enter a state of mind where it is easy to focus upon one thing. We have explored different techniques you can use and if you need a quick reminder then check out our ‘Types of Meditation’ post.
So why start a daily meditation practice?
There are many benefits to practising meditation. Here are just a few examples of how it can help:
- Meditation can help to reduce stress and anxiety.
- Meditation can increase self-awareness.
- Meditation can enable you to focus on the present moment.
- Meditation can help to reduce negative emotions.
- Meditation can help to increase creativity and imagination.
The Challenge
The aim of the challenge is to incorporate a meditation practice into your daily routine for 30-days. Here at Learn Your Flow we have already explored the first few key topics to help you kick start your practice. If you are just starting out this challenge is an excellent way to explore different techniques that can be used and overcoming any obstacles you across.
Here are our top 5 tips when it comes to starting your own practice:
- Build it into your morning or evening routine – Everyone has a routine whether it be brushing your teeth or having a cup of tea in the morning, so why not include a 5-10 minuet meditation in amongst your activities.
- Find a quiet space – When first starting out you may find that you get distracted more easily so choosing your space where you will not be disturbed is a useful exercise.
- Switch it up – there is a time and a place for repeating the same meditation every day but for now widen your experience by choosing different techniques and forms of meditation to find the best one that works for you.
- Journal your results – you may find that it is hard to stay motivated if you can’t see the impact the meditation is having in your life. So even if it is just a quick sentence to say how you are feeling or which technique you used will help you to log your progress.
- Start small – When starting your new practice don’t expect to be an expert from the word go. There are many things that take a lot of practice and meditation is one of them. To not get deflated start small with a practice of 3-5minuets and slowly build yourself up as you grow in confidence.
So, if you are feeling inspired to take on this challenge stay tuned for hints and tips that we will share which will help you along the way. It is amazing when you can feel the benefits of meditation so why not give it a go!
