Sometimes life can feel a bit dull, repetitive, stressful, or unfulfilling. This can lead to feeling like you’re on a never-ending treadmill with no reward. Life can also throw you a curve ball which requires you to change your life in a drastic way. Both scenarios can mean that something needs to change in your life and here at Learn Your Flow we recognise change can be overwhelming and difficult. So, we have put together a few life coaching techniques to help you overcome the overwhelming feeling and teach you how to set realistic goals to help improve your life in a positive way. These techniques can also be used to help you live more authentically and in accordance to your values as we explored in our previous posts here at Learn Your Flow.

In this post we will be exploring a technique used by many different life coaches that helps to identify areas you wish to work on. Identifying that change is required is the first step to making positive changes but that doesn’t help you work out where the best place is to start. You may be thinking that you may need to change many things to get to where you want to be which can be one reason why change can feel overwhelming. If this is the case, there are tools you can use to help break down your life to make it more manageable.

So, let’s get started!

The technique we will be exploring today is The Wheel of Life. The idea behind this technique is to reduce the overwhelming feeling by breaking down your life into different categories. This technique is designed to be a visual aid to identifying areas of your life that need improvement.

This is done by using the different areas or categories to label different segments of the wheel. The wheel is constructed of 10 rings and for each category you rate that area out of 10 (1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest). Once you have done this you can either colour or mark the segment on the wheel with the rating you have chosen. Once you have done this for each area you will be able to see which area in your life needs the most improvement.

There are many different versions of this technique, and you can find free versions that you can print off, on the internet. One thing to bear in mind as you search for a wheel, is the categories may not always be the same. So, it is useful to spend some time thinking about what categories are most relevant to you. If you want to be creative, you can also create your own wheel and choose the categories for yourself.

Here are some examples of categories that come up the most:

  • Physical Health
  • Mental Health
  • Personal Growth
  • Family
  • Friends
  • Career
  • Finance
  • Relationships
  • Spirituality
  • Community
  • Environment

Sometimes if there are a lot of areas that need to be improved it may bring you down. So here at Learn Your Flow we encourage you to take moment to write down 3 positive things for each category of the wheel to help balance the process.

Once you have completed these two exercises (rating the categories out of 10 and writing 3 positive things for each category) you can start to think about which category you wish to priorities ready for the next steps. These next steps include creating achievable goals to kick start the changes you wish to make.

During our next post here at Learn Your Flow we will be exploring how to set achievable goals using a specific model which will help you make the goals more successful. We hope you have enjoyed this post and we will see you next time!
